Academic Showcase
Out of Uniform Collection
Freshmen members of the Student Council helped collect close to $800 in order to support IHM's Food Pantry. Student Council students are the key volunteers for all food pantries that SHDHS supports.
Cyber Science Project Trial 1
Cyber Science students performed the first real-life testing of VIAS (Visually Impaired Assistance System). The project is finally at its testing phase and Anna Dinius, Michael Renaker, William Bartlett, and Carson Schmidt outfitted the 400 hallway to be accessible by a visually impaired person.
STEM
The STEM students are into our engineering semester so that means projects! For a warmup project to practice measurement, spatial relationships, specifications/calculations, and creativity, they did a two-day paper science engineering project. Ask your student about their project, how successful they were at “building” their package, and the advertising they put on their package. Above are pictures from 3rd Period STEM on Day 1 of the project. The following link is a song that inspired this introductory project: https://youtu.be/5fVGZZMx3No
Sophomore Religion Classes
The Sophomores are currently wrapping up "Unit 8: The Incarnation" in Religion class. During this unit, the students wrestle with theological concepts that require some mental effort. Topics such as the Hypostatic Union and Kenosis call for some creative lesson planning so that students can wrap their minds around the topic matter. This year, we brought Chemistry into the classroom! Mr. Z had arranged a series of experiments and called forward student volunteers to assist with the demonstrations. The demonstrations included foam cubes, plush cotton balls, colored water, cabbage juice, salt, and a combination of vinegar and baking soda which led to bubbling results! Without having had the purpose of the demonstrations revealed to them, the students analyzed the experiments and drew excellent connections to class. Mr. Z then revealed that each demonstration was used to metaphorically represent a Christian heresy that denied the Hypostatic Union of Jesus Christ, which in turn led to a full class discussion. A little cross-curricular learning and doing things outside the norm can go a long way to enable students to understand the course material. Bonus points if they have some fun along the way!
Honors Geometry
Mrs. Vaillancourt's sophomores in Honors Geometry are applying what they learned about Similar figures to create scale drawings and blueprints of their homes.

Respect Life Reflection:
“As a society and as individuals, we often measure ourselves by false standards: by what and how much we do, our successes or failures, how others treat us, the degree of our pleasure or independence, etc. And when these changeable substitutes prove to be insufficient, or when we are faced with challenges and suffering, we may feel helpless, alone, or abandoned; we may be tempted to feel as though our lives have decreased value or worth. But God's love—individual, real, unchanging—is the true source of our worth, identity, and dignity. It really is not a question of who we are, but rather whose we are. Because his love will never change, nothing can reduce our God-given dignity, and nothing can diminish the immeasurable worth of our lives.”

Crusaders of the Week
Mr. Avina and Ms. Vollmer nominate Jack Theus Drama 1 Crusader of the Week. Jack is always attentive and willing to take a stab at what is thrown his way in Drama 1. Be it a historical lesson and connecting the dots, or working on a group project and offering his ideas. He is studious and takes direction extremely well. He has a great attitude about group projects and class activities. His genuine interest in subject matter and discussions is enlightening, but most of all, he shows up with his authentic self each and every day. Congratulations Jack!
The Crusader of the Week for Latin 1 is Molly Krallman. Molly began this school year in the regular Latin 1 class but soon discovered that she had an interest in, and a great aptitude for the language. As a result, Molly took the initiative to meet with her teacher and counselor and move up to the Latin 1 Honors class for the second semester. She has been studying diligently in order to learn in just a couple of weeks the extra vocabulary words and materials which Honors students learned last semester. Even though she has had to do a lot of work on her own, Molly has really impressed her teacher by keeping pace with the Honor’s workload. Besides having a natural talent for the Latin language, Molly has also proven to know a great deal about Greek and Roman mythology - even helping her teacher Ms. Kempf to remember a name or fact when it eludes her. Congratulations Molly - keep up the stellar work!

News from the Counseling Department
Course scheduling (2022-2023 school year) for new and returning students is underway. Over the past week, the counselors met with every grade level. We challenged students to find a balance when selecting their course requests. We want students to be appropriately placed, so they are academically challenged, but not overwhelmed.
We discussed the following topics during our classroom visits:
- Timeline for 22-23 Scheduling
- Review Graduation Requirements
- Scheduling Worksheet
- Course options for each grade level
- “Scheduling in Context” (Making sure students are accounting for extracurricular activities and family responsibilities.)
- Processes and Procedures - How to schedule
- Next steps
Timeline for 2022-2023 Course Scheduling
January 18-20 - Classroom Meetings
January 27 - Scheduling window opens
February 11 - Scheduling window closes
March - April - Mr. Gish creates the ‘master schedule’
May - Counselors places students in schedules
May 26 (last day of school) - Students receive class schedules for the 2022-2023 school year!
Students were instructed to follow these "next steps":
- Review Course Description Guide
- Consult teachers, parents, and counselors
- You can count on the counselors to advise students to select courses that will ensure they meet graduation requirements and position them for college admission and scholarship consideration or any other post-secondary plans the student may have.
- Make their choices
- Input their course requests in Tyler SIS before February 11 (Classes are not filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. The master schedule is not built until all course requests are entered.)
Individual Incoming Freshmen Course Scheduling Meetings
- Once a student has applied and been accepted as an incoming freshman for the 2022-2023 school year, a meeting with the student, their parent(s) or guardians, and one of our counselors will be scheduled.
- Meetings will be offered from Jan. 17-March 3.
- During this meeting, counselors will work with families 1:1 to finalize the student’s freshman year course requests.
