Catholic Schools Week
We have many activities planned to celebrate the people in the SHDHS community who help us grow in faith, achieve excellence, and develop a heart for service. The theme this year is Faith. Excellence. Service.
Last weekend, the Crusaders brought home some great hardware from the Governor's Cup District tournament. They placed first in Quick Recall and Future Problem Solving, and many individuals earned medals in subject tests and written composition. These amazing students placed second overall in a very close battle. Let's go, Cru! On to Regionals!
FPS Team - Sydney Hennessey, Carson Gould, Gracie Greber, Sam Lewis, Ella Rolfsen, Coach Melinda Gould
Quick Recall Team - George Barsan (Captain), Charlie Barsan, Killian Hicks, Jack Goodwin, Andrew Goodwin, Noah Francis, Harry Barsan, Coach Michael Fay
Charlie Barsan - 2nd in Math, 5th in Science
George Barsan - 1st in Math, 2nd in Social Studies
Harry Barsan - 4th in Language Arts
Moira Fagarang - 5th in Language Arts, 4th in Arts & Humanities
Noah Francis - 2nd in Composition
Jack Goodwin - 4th in Science
Killian Hicks - 4th in Social Studies, 2nd in Arts & Humanities
Mitchell Wolking - 3rd in Composition
Congratulations Noah Francis
Next-Gen Personal Finance is a nationwide organization that helps teachers and students expand their personal finance knowledge. Noah Francis, along with ten of his classmates, entered the Payback Challenge sponsored back in October. Students had to play a game on the website and then create an essay or video reflecting on the lessons learned in the game. One thousand two hundred students nationwide entered this contest. Noah was chosen as the $1000 winner from the state of Kentucky. Click here to view the video.
2022 Creative Crusader Visual Art Competition
The SHDHS Visual Art department offers an annual art competition open for any student in grades 5-8 for awards and scholarships. This year, we were able to have an art show displaying all the competing artwork. 8th graders Jackelyn Fernandez, Juliana Mendez, and Elizabeth Egan placed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, respectively, for their artwork. The 1st place winner, Jackelyn, received a $750 scholarship to SHDHS!
Congratulations! Maria Brockman won the Think the Vote contest last week for her response to the question, "Should the US Government Forgive Student Loans?" (https://www.thinkthevote.com/join-the-debate/should-the-united-states-government-forgive-student-loans/). This is Maria's second time winning the contest this year, and she won $25, a gift pack, and an entry into their $1000 scholarship at the end of the year. Congratulations, Maria!

Scheduling for 2022-2023 is now live!
The scheduling portal is now open for students to enter their course requests for next year. Students have until Friday, February 11, to get everything entered. As a reminder, this is not a first come-first served situation; we will wait to start scheduling until all requests are entered. Helpful documents were shared in the students' classroom presentations, and they are all linked below for your reference.
Students should follow these scheduling process steps:
- Review Course Description Guide and Program of Study Chart.
- Consult teachers, parents, and counselors.
- Log in to Tyler SIS using this link and click on the "Student" tab. Use the Google single sign-on.
- Once you log in, there will be a banner in yellow that says "Course requests may now be entered;" click on "View."
- Click "Add requests" (lower right corner).
- Drop down to "Subject selection list" and click "Next."
- Using your appropriate grade level worksheet as a guide, select the appropriate courses for 22-23. Courses are grouped by department; simply check the box for the course you want to select and continue until all of your courses are checked. You will have six total credits requested. Note that Religion is not listed for you to select; the appropriate Religion class will be scheduled for you. You do not need to request it.
- After checking all boxes, click "Next" (lower right corner).
- Review the list and click "Save" (lower right corner).
- You will get a "Data successfully saved" message (lower right corner).
- Complete the Alternate Course Request Form. In the case of a schedule conflict for your original elective requests, we will use this form to fill a gap with something else you'd like, rather than us picking for you.
Congratulations! You have now completed your course requests for 2022-2023!
If you have technical issues, see the Tech department. Let your counselor know if you have any questions or issues with the course selection process.

CRU Bid & Bash
The 2022 Cru Bid & Bash is going virtual again this year! This annual auction is our school's longest-running fundraiser (can you believe this will be our school's 23rd annual auction event?), and we are always humbled by the support we garner from parents, alumni, and community members alike.
While the actual date of the virtual event is Saturday, February 19, the fun started early with our "Buffalo Trace Bourbon Basket" Kick-Off Raffle last November and XBox Raffle last December. But that was just the tip of the iceberg…or items…up for grabs this year. Our committee is gearing up to share the rest of their amazing "Best of Live" Raffle and Silent Auction items with you over the coming weeks, items such as:
- A Red River Gorge Getaway & Kayak Adventure for up to 8 people
- A Pro Sports Fan Experience (NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB, or PGA) for 2 people
- An Irrigation and Lighting Package from Expert Irrigation
- Mixology Lessons + Bonefish Grill Package for up to 10 people
- Designer Purses, Reserved Parking Spots, Lottery Ticket Basket, Alcohol Basket, SHDHS Custom Cornhole Set, and much, much more!
Be on the lookout for more information on the VERY popular Best of Bid & Bash Raffle next week. This raffle kicks off on Monday, February 7, and will be quickly followed up with our Playstation 5 Raffle.
If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact the Advancement Office at 859.525.0255 or [email protected].
Donations for Cru Bid & Bash
We are still accepting donations for the Bid & Bash, most especially gift cards or cash. Please click here for the complete list of gift cards our committee is currently soliciting. If you are looking for a way to help with this year's event (that doesn't involve giving up any of your limited time), a gift card or cash donation may be for you! Donations can be dropped off in the school office anytime between now and Friday, February 4 (please mark to the attention "Bid & Bash").

Academic Showcase
Stem
Our SHDHS STEM and STEM HONORS students completed their first mini engineering project and competition. The boxes are made from paper and follow measurement and instruction guidelines. The students then chose a product to put in their package and advertise it creatively. Congrats to our classroom finalists for "Best Overall Package": Eileen Michels, Julia Lyons, Avery Pleiman, Gavin Armbruster, and Magdalene Jump. Congrats to our classroom finalist for "Most Creative Package": Claire Schild, Jack Stich, Ben Dunham, Ainsley Potter, and Addison Millsap.
All students then voted to choose an overall winner in each category and win a donut party for their class. Congrats to Avery Pleiman for winning "Best Overall Package" and Ben Dunham for "Most Creative Package!"
Spanish I Classes
The project was about visiting one of the 21 Spanish-speaking countries. The students talked about places they visited, souvenirs they bought, and the favorite food they had. Some of the food they presented were arepitas dulces, pastel tres leches, alfajores, helado de cajeta, horchata, cubos de mango, cubitos rellenos de guayaba,
and buñuelos y plátanos fritos. They did a fantastic job cooking and having everything individually wrapped so that they could share.

SHDHS is proud to offer Esports as an officially sanctioned KHSAA sport in both the fall and spring seasons. We are hoping to add to our growing collection!

March for Life
A group of 22 from SHDHS attended the 49th Annual March for Life this year in Washington DC. The March commemorates the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, which legalized abortion in the US. We started the day celebrating Mass with our Diocese, attended the outdoor Rally, which featured some amazing speakers, and concluded with over 100,000 people marching past the steps of the US Supreme Court as a witness to those who cannot speak for themselves, the unborn! The temperatures were low, but our spirits were high as we marched for a world where the beauty and dignity of every human life are valued and protected.
Collection for Emergency Cold Shelter of Northern KY during Catholic School Week: January 31- February 4

Crusaders of the Week
Ms. Poly nominates Anna Dinius for the Crusader of the Week award. Anna is an absolute pleasure to be around. She is committed, kind, and most importantly has amazing communication skills. Anna's skills go beyond her academic capabilities; she is super creative and knows how to think outside the box. She has quickly proven to be a leader among her small group when working on projects. Anna's enthusiasm rubs off on those around her. She is prepared for class every day, is attentive while in class, and treats peers and adults alike with respect. Congratulations Anna!
It is with great pleasure that Mrs. Schwarz nominates Carter Scheben for student of the week in her Wellness and Lifetime fitness class. Carter is a hard worker and a wonderful example of what it means to push yourself, not only on the baseball field but the work necessary for an athlete to perform to their full potential. Carter consistently demonstrates great strength during our weekly workouts and does his best to get the most out of each session. Carter is a leader, understands the meaning of teamwork, and can get along with others. Congratulations, Carter, on this well-deserved award.
