Congratulations to Emma Fischer and Stephanie Gruener for their creative colored pencil projects. And congratulations to Mackenzie Smith for her acrylic painting master study on canvas shoes! This is the first time students have painted on canvas shoes, and they all did a great job! Next project: acrylic self-portrait with a robotic twist. STAY TUNED!
Spanish Club and Spanish Honor Society will be hosting a fundraiser called The Pulsera Project from February 28 - March 11. We will sell colorful hand-woven bracelets and bags made by artists from Guatemala and Nicaragua. These items will be available for sale every day during FLEX and select days before and after school. This is the second Pulsera Project that we have hosted at SHDHS. Our clubs chose this fundraiser because it is an impactful organization that gives back to its artists and invests in improving their communities while educating our community and sharing some of their art and culture.
The Pulsera Project has three main components - employment, education, and impact. The Pulsera Project employs artists in Nicaragua and Guatemala with well-paying Fair Trade Jobs, providing positive & uplifting work in countries with high unemployment and frequently tough working conditions. Through Pulsera sales in the U.S., The Pulsera Project provides students with a unique cultural education experience, allowing them to bring the beauty of Latin American culture to life in their classrooms and hallways. Proceeds from Pulsera sales are invested in Central American communities. We work side-by-side with community leaders to find high-impact investments that empower people with the skills to take control of their lives. For more information, visit https://www.pulseraproject.org/.

The English III Honors class is currently studying The Great Gatsby and the culture and values it embodies of the 1920s. Students will eventually debate the greatness of the main character and the relationship between Modernism and Post-Modernism.

Campus Ministry

Ash Wednesday, March 2, marks the beginning of Lent. Students will attend Mass on Wednesday. Campus Ministry will provide a variety of personal and communal times of prayer, fasting, service, and almsgiving during the 40 days of Lent. Masses, small faith-sharing, and bible study groups will be offered in the morning before school or during flex, typically on Wednesdays. Students will sign up for groups on Monday. Students (and families) who would like information about being baptized and joining (or returning to) the Church are invited to email apooat@shdhs.org. Deacon Larry Kleisinger will be meeting with all who are interested.
Pope Francis asks the world to offer Ash Wednesday as a special day of prayer and fasting for peace in Ukraine.
Reminder: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence from meat. Fasting is required of Catholics ages 18 - 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. Abstinence from meat is also required during the Fridays of Lent for those 14 and older.

Grandparent Masses
Please invite grandparents (or grandparent figures) to the annual grandparent Mass(es)! Each grade level will celebrate Mass in the auditorium. Grandparents will be seated at 10:00 am. Mass starts at 10:15 am, followed by a light refreshment/reception.
- Sophomore -
February 25 rescheduled March 24
- Junior - March 10
- Senior - March 31
Please RSVP here.

This past week, a collection of students from the Junior class departed for the Jesuit Spiritual Center (Milford) for their Junior retreat. Despite the heavy rain, the mood was bright, and the students were met by the welcoming JSC staff. The retreat team then introduced the Juniors to a key theme of the retreat: Monserrat. Monserrat is where
St. Ignatius had a vision of the Blessed Mother and where he laid down his sword and armor, culminating his conversion from a vainglory soldier to a knight of God. In parallel to Ignatius's experience at Monserrat, the Juniors proceeded to reflect upon their lives and see which next steps God was calling them to. The two days were filled with a balance of witness stories, fun group activities, and time for quiet reflection and prayer.

Crusaders of the Week

Mrs. Coronado nominates Carmen Ives for Spanish II Crusader of the Week. Not all the starts in life are good, beautiful, and smooth, but Carmen has constantly shown that there is not an obstacle that cannot be overcome. It's merely a catalyst that can open someone up to discussion and understanding. I personally have noticed Carmen takes these opportunities and uses them to help her achieve greater goals. Spanish II has been a much better experience and it is delightful to watch her grow in her understanding, participation, and appreciation in my class. Thank you for bringing your spark and sweetness to our classroom. Muy Bien Carmen!
Mr. Payne nominates Jason Bish Crusader of the Week for Beginning Band. There are many Cadets worthy of this honor, but Jason is our stand-out for Crusader of the Week. He is the embodiment of our band creed, He is reverent. He demonstrates good character every day. He is committed to his personal growth and the growth of the band. He strives for excellence. Thank you and congratulations, Jason!
