National Recognition
Congratulations to our own Chilota Iloegbunam, one of 62,000 students from across the country who earn academic honors from the College Board’s National Recognition Programs! These National Recognition Programs grant underrepresented students academic honors that can be included on college and scholarship applications and connect students with universities across the country, helping them stand out during the admissions process. Colleges and scholarship programs use these honors to identify students from underrepresented groups through College Board’s Student Search Service.

Chilota Iloegbunam earned this recognition by excelling on her PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, or AP Exams and in her classrooms. Students who may be eligible have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and have excelled on the PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10, or earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP Exams; and are African American or Black, Hispanic American or Latinx, Indigenous, and/or attend school in a rural area or small town. Eligible students are invited to apply during their sophomore or junior year and are awarded at the beginning of the next school year.

Friendship Dance/CRU Olympic Day
On Friday, 8/26, SHDHS held our very own Olympic games! Students enjoyed a cookout served by our FEC and STUCO, followed by grade-level competitions with various events. Activities included cornhole, egg races, water balloon toss, musical squares, hula hoops, and a pickleball tournament between faculty and selected students. The students won an out-of-uniform day (date to be announced).

Shadow Visits
SHDHS is happy to announce that we will begin welcoming 8th-grade shadow students beginning on Wednesday, September 14. A Shadow Student visit is a great way for prospective students to see all SHDHS offers. During their visit, prospective students will experience a day in the life of our Crusaders. Shadow Students spend time in our classrooms, meet and talk to various SHDHS faculty and staff, learn the ins and outs of navigating our hallways, share lunch with current students, and much more. If you have an 8th grader or know of a family interested in sending their child to SHDHS, please pass on the information. To sign up for a visit, please click here.
IMMUNIZATIONS
Kentucky requires all enrolled students to have on file a current Certificate of Immunization form. Parents have been notified by email and phone if we are missing this form. Forms must be in the office by September 30 for your student to attend classes. If you have a doctor’s appointment after September 30, please inform the office at tbutler@shdhs.org or 859-525-0255.

Campus Ministry

Attention all Junior parents.
Our first Junior retreat is coming up fast—it will be held September 20-21! The junior retreat is a great time to grow closer to Jesus, experience a break from the noisy and chaotic world, and connect with friends and classmates. All junior students have chosen their retreat date. Click here to view the roster. I encourage you to review the retreat roster, mark your calendars, and check for any conflicts. Please send any concerns to Annie Poat at anniepoat@shdhs.org. The January retreat is at full capacity, so, unfortunately, nobody can be moved to the January retreat unless a spot opens up.
Finally, the permission form, medical release form, and retreat guidelines for the September retreat are here. These two forms are due by September 13 for all Junior students attending the first retreat.

Academic Showcase

Visual Art starts off the school year strong!
The first two weeks of school have shown great promise to our budding artists. Art 1 and Art 2 classes are busy working away on the fundamentals of drawing a still life involving composition, proportion, and sizing with introductions to two elements of Art: Line and Value! Our Art 3 kids are working hard on re-creating a brand new piece out of old pieces, and our AP kids are practicing experimentation with new media. Everyone is working hard! We are excited to be back creating things!

Crusaders of the week

Although it is early in the year, this STEM Honors student has already shown great promise and excellence in the classroom. Mrs. Bessler proudly nominates Anthony Crawford for Crusader of the Week for STEM Explorations Honors for the 2022-2023 school year. Anthony comes to class prepared each day. He answers questions readily and asks for clarification when needed. He thinks logically and applies information well. With these skills, he recently led his STEM Honors 2-person team to a win in the first “Logic Box” contest. Based on his performance, the Crusader family can expect great things from Anthony in the classroom and beyond.
Congratulations, Anthony, on being nominated Crusader of the Week for STEM Explorations Honors! The SHDHS community can’t wait to see what your future holds!
Mrs. Reding would like to nominate junior Rick Erwin for Crusader of the Week in Algebra 2 Honors. From Day 1, Rick has been coming to class ready to go! He has quickly proven to be a leader among his peers, especially working in small groups. His enthusiasm and positive demeanor elevate the learning atmosphere for the entire class. Thanks to Rick for making our 4th-period math class positive and engaging. Congratulations, and keep up the great work!
