SHDHS welcomed Maggie Rnaz, the Early Matters Coordinator for the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati, on September 9. Mrs. Rnaz talked to the students about Down Syndrome, The Buddy Walk, and the importance of inclusive education. At the end of the presentation, Jenna Hail's parents were presented with a check that would go towards the largest fundraiser for bringing awareness to Down Syndrome, The Buddy Walk. The Buddy Walk donation was possible because the students purchased drinks from the Cru Cafe.

All volleyball players and parents were invited to attend the Playing For a Purpose Mass held on Sunday, September 18, at Mother of God Church. Janet Chambers from I Have Wings spoke briefly to everyone from both SHDHS & NDA volleyball programs afterward in the church basement. Donuts and coffee were provided. All girls dressed up in their Sunday best and sat together. This was a very special day where we gathered with our entire program & our opponent (NDA) as one large group. It was a time to praise God for our many blessings and also a time for us to understand the mission of Playing for a Purpose and the reason why the game is played.

Student Council
The Class of 2026 successfully organized the out-of-uniform collection for September 16, raising $850 for BeCon Food Pantry.

Crusaders of the Week

Ms. Poly nominates Dave Reding for Crusader of the Week in AP Computer Science. Dave, you are a deep thinker. It is fantastic to see a student taking content previously taught into a critical thinking situation - even when the discussion is whether a double should be cast into an int or the other way around. You will discuss your thought process and analyze the possibilities. This level of thought will take you far and beyond after high school, and Ms. Poly looks forward to being a part of that. Dr. Seuss said, "Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is you-er than you."
Mr. Trame nominates Ashley Milner, Physical Education Crusader of the Week. Ashley is a hall of fame young lady who has done an outstanding job in Physical Education Class. She is always exactly where she's supposed to be when she's supposed to be there. She acts appropriately without fail. She tries her best at all activities and sports whether she possesses the ability. Ashley thrives at the three rules necessary for success. She does what's right. She does her best. She treats others the way she likes to be treated. Well done, Ashley, and Congratulations!!!!

Academic Showcase

Solving Equations Review
Ms. Grosser's Algebra I CP I students reviewed for their test this week in a unique way. They practiced solving equations using sidewalk chalk outside and hanging dry erase boards inside. The students thoroughly enjoyed this review opportunity.

AP Chemistry Scavenger Hunt
AP Chemistry students went on a lab scavenger hunt to find and identify all of the glassware they will be using this year. They worked in teams to find the necessary equipment, and Mr. Fay quizzed the group afterward to ensure they knew all the items' names.

Athletic News

On Monday morning, over 100 golfers met at Summit Hills Country Club to play a day of golf. Throughout the day on the course, golfers were allowed to play a few games to help their score and participated in on-course contests. Everyone enjoyed the skirt hole, wearing a skirt and teeing off at the women’s tee.
The winning team for the day, at -12 winning in a scorecard playoff, was Roger Trapp, Paul Hennessey, Sean Belton, and Jason Keipert. Second place went to Paul Bambach, Matt Brady, Brian Best, and Ryan Mutalib.
The goal of the golfathon was to raise $55,000. Thanks to your generous support and that of our sponsors, we raised over $70,000!
On behalf of the Athletic Department, Boosters, Coaches, and Athletes, we would like to thank everyone who donated or helped to make this a successful event. Thank you to Izzy’s and Snappy Tomato Pizza for providing on-course lunch for the competitors. And to Pepsi and BioFuel for providing hydration.
Stay tuned for a Save the Date for next year's Golfathon!

Campus Ministry

Another fun event in campus ministry last week was our very first Pretzel and Praise event. A group of 15 students gathered to snack on soft pretzels and give thanksgiving and praise to God for all the wonderful things in our lives.
SUMMIT22 Eucharistic Retreat for Youth will be here before you know it! SUMMIT22 is a weekend retreat that leads young people, through prayer and instruction before the Blessed Sacrament, to a personal encounter and ever-deepening union with Jesus Christ. SHDHS would like to send a group of students to this retreat on October 7-9, 2022. One adult (over 21) is required to chaperone every seven students, so if you are interested in chaperoning this retreat, please email anniepoat@shdhs.org. Here is a link to learn more about SUMMIT22 at https://covdio.org/summit22/
Se ptember is Suicide Awareness month.
Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for teenagers and young adults ages 15-24. In 2020, 45,979 Americans died from suicide. In 2020 there were an estimated 1.20 million suicide attempts. This past summer, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline was introduced to help those in need.
We want our school to have a safe place to take a “brain break.” Students benefit from having calm and quiet spaces at school when they need to take a break and regroup.
We will collect donations for the counseling department's sitting area and the campus ministry room for the rest of September. The following items will help students calm down, reflect, and refresh so they can get through the day:
Pens, pencils, journals/notebooks, colored pencils, coloring books for teenagers, 8oz (small bottles) of bottled waters, kleenexes, individual snacks, and push bubble poppers.
Let’s go, Cru families! Please make this a success for our students! Your kindness and generosity will remind students that the SHDHS community cares about them and understands that teenagers need to take a break now and then.
A box will be sat at the main entrance doors of the school for your donations. Please place bottles of water on the floor beside the container.
Send William Bartlett: bartlettw.student@shdhs.org an email with a picture of 2 or more donated items, and your name will be put into a drawing for a gift card. The winner will be announced at school on Friday, September 30.
Join us for the Annual Walk for Life on Saturday, October 1 in Frankfort!
This year, the Walk will be on the Capitol grounds in Frankfort. Families are welcome!
The Walk this year will be part of a 3-in-1 Event. At 2:00 pm, our Celebration of the end of Roe in the USA and the closing of Kentucky's abortion clinics kick-off. This celebration combines a Rally for Yes-for-Life because passing Ballot Measure #2 in the November General Election ensures that no right to abortion nor any funding for abortion can be found in the Kentucky Constitution!
Most Rev. John Iffert, Bishop of Covington, will be speaking at this ecumenical event, where we will join people from throughout the State of Kentucky marching in support of LIFE.
Walk for Life is being organized by Kentucky Right to Life and the Catholic Conference of Kentucky. Register near the Capitol steps at 1:00 pm.
