A New Tradition Begins
On a perfect Wednesday night for some football, the Crusader Youth League kicked off its inaugural flag football season this past week. Two hundred sixty kids from first to eighth grade participated in games held throughout the evening on Gumz Family Track & Field. The inaugural flag football season will run through May 24, with champions in each division being crowned Wednesday, May 31. The night was a tremendous success due mainly to the generosity of league sponsors and volunteers. Thank you to each of our CYL sponsors for their continued support. Teacher of the Year Award
The Teacher of the Year Award recognizes the faculty member that diligently works to keep St. Henry an exceptional environment—the student body votes to recognize SHDHS Teacher of the Year. The 2023 Teacher of the Year brings a special energy to the building daily; sometimes, her energy is "masked"...  Congratulations, Katie Vonhandorf!!!
Mrs. Vonhandorf, Ms. Baker, Katie, Masked Bengal… You are incredible! Your ability to shift gears to include every student in every activity is unique. Seeing your daily interactions with students, the joy you bring to the room, and, unfortunately, your occasional Bengal spirit wear is dynamic.  
Ms. Addison Millsap said it best, "I know that I am only one vote out of hundreds of students, but Mrs. Vonhandorf deserves this; she has changed my life. I have found that she is one of the teachers I look forward to having daily. She is very bright and positive but matches the students' moods on the off chance something is happening. She is my trusted teacher, and I know I can go to her when I need something. Especially when things began to fall in the second semester of my freshman year, she was always a shining face in the storm of people around me. I always struggle when opening up to new people, but it was an instantaneous student and teacher bond. I can sincerely say she deserves this from my heart."

While on break, senior swimmer Emma Littrell was named 2022-2023 LaRosa's MVP. This honor is given to the best in Greater Cincinnati High School Sports. Congratulations Emma! We cannot wait to see what you accomplish at Eastern Michigan!

SHDHS Crusader Summer Camps and Activities will be here before we know it! This summer, SHDHS is excited to offer a variety of athletic and fine art activities for your sons and daughters, including:

Our coaches, faculty members, and students would love to spend time with your child(ren) this summer, helping them learn valuable skills while having fun. New CRU Yard Signs will be delivered to your feeder school. If your son/daughter is not in a feeder school, we will deliver to your home, or you can stop by the front office and pick it up.

School Uniforms - Can be purchased where ever you would like. The uniform policy is found on page 42 in the Student Handbook.

2023 Summer Enhancement Math Program for Incoming Freshmen
The Math program is designed to enhance math skills and remediate basic math concepts to better position students for the school year. The program provides support for those needing review for Algebra I. For more information, contact Mandy Finke at [email protected].

2023 Summer Enhancement English Program for Incoming Freshman
The English summer enhancement program is designed to reinforce students' skills essential for a successful transition into a high-school-level class. To increase comprehension, students will practice critical reading techniques such as close reading, note-taking, and annotating. Additionally, students will incorporate writing tools to effectively communicate, develop and support ideas in an organized and focused manner.

Math placement test information for 2023-2024 freshmen

This MATH Placement test is for incoming first-year students interested in taking Algebra II Honors as a freshman. Mrs. Finke nominates Malia Jones Crusader of the Week for Algebra. Malia transferred to SHDHS at the beginning of the 2nd semester. Switching schools is not easy for any student, socially but also academically, because each class covers different content at different times. She came into my Algebra class worried about her ability. As the weeks and months went by, she continued to advocate for help daily to ensure she knew what she was doing. As time passed, she stopped asking questions and had confidence in her ability. This week she culminated all her hard work and advocacy skills, earning 100% on her Polynomial test. I am so proud of her drive to want to do better and finally realizing she has had the ability the whole time. Congratulations Malia!

Ms. Jeanne Veith nominates Nathan Francis. According to Ben Franklin, "Diligence is the mother of good luck, and God gives all things to industry," emphasizing the value of hard work and its benefits. A student who embodies this work ethic in English II Honors is Nathan Francis. While Nathan may seem to earn good grades without even trying to be the oblivious observer, Nathan's attention to detail, drive, organization, and systematic planning propel his success. Nothing comes to him that he does not work for, and if he does face a stumbling block, he does not wait for it to resolve itself but seeks the best way to overcome it. Furthermore, he is an excellent classmate to all the students in his classes, willing to work with the most frustrating people and treat everyone respectfully and kindly. Congratulations Nathan! He is a pleasure to have in class.

Thank you, Megan, for being awesome in US Government and Special Topics! Ms. Brady and Mrs. Kaiser-Munday nominate Megan Thomas for our Social Studies Crusader of the Week. Megan works hard, participates, and is willing to learn; that is so pleasant in the second semester of her senior year. Megan's effort and creativity in class have been such a benefit to not only herself but her classmates. Her smile is something that her teachers appreciate and can change the world.

The sophomores just wrapped up a discussion about the Sermon on the Mount, especially focusing on the lines of the Lord's Prayer. In this lesson, the class reflected on the importance of forgiveness, as expressed in the line, "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us." It is a "dangerous" line in which Christians ask God to forgive in the same way they show forgiveness to others. Forgiveness is hard to give and sometimes hard to accept. Nobody needs instruction to recognize this reality.

To demonstrate that human beings can forgive in the same manner that God forgives, the sophomores learned of the story of Immaculée Ilibagiza. Before hearing her story, the students were tasked with fitting as many students as possible within a 3x4 square taped off on the floor. The most successful class managed to fit in 17 students! Mr. Z then asked eight students to stay in the square while introducing Immaculée's story.

Immaculée survived the Rwandan genocide (1994) by hiding alongside seven other women in a bathroom (3 feet by 4 feet). She went on to be a witness to the power of forgiveness, extending forgiveness to her family's murderer face-to-face and speaking internationally on behalf of peace. Besides being moved by Immaculée's story, students were challenged to seek opportunities to extend and request forgiveness in their lives. Though a powerful and even haunting lesson, the students also had fun!

The Spanish I students started their trip around some Spanish-speaking countries to learn general information about their history, culture, and traditions. 
The first stop was Puerto Rico, where the students could try homemade desserts. 

The second stop was the Dominican Republic, where they tried food like flan, empanadas rellenas de carne, and galletas de limón and learned how to dance the bachata.

Mrs. Kaiser-Munday's AP Government classes are reviewing for their May 1st AP exam. They are doing their annual shower curtain review, where they write a comprehensive study on a shower curtain and are creative! This helps prepare them with all the materials they have learned this year!

Pickleball is Coming to the SHAC (35 Cavalier Blvd, Florence)
Not sure what "dink" means? It's a pickleball term. If you want to learn how to play the sport sweeping the nation, join us on Thursday, May 11, at the SHAC. 
Don Seibert, USA Pickleball Ambassador, will join the Athletic Department to hold clinics at 9:00 am, 10:00 am, and 11:00 am.
The clinic costs $10.00 cash and will be accepted at the door on the day of the clinic.
Paddles and balls will be provided.

BOYS' BASKETBALL SPRING OPEN GYMS
Mondays, beginning April 24 through May 15, 3:00-4:30 at the SHAC. This is for anyone not in a fall sport.   All players must sign up on Final Forms before attending.

SHDHS Boys Basketball and Girls Volleyball 30th Annual Golf Outing
The St. Henry District High School Women's Volleyball and Men's Basketball Teams will be hosting their 30th annual Golf Scramble on Saturday, May 13, with a noon start off both #1 and #10 tees. This year's event will be held at Lassing Pointe Golf Course, and it will be a four-person scramble for all participants. The cost is $125 per player, which includes 18 holes, a cart rental, three drink tickets, and a late lunch that will be provided on the turn. If you are interested in golfing, please email [email protected]. 
Both squads are already working hard to prepare for an enjoyable and successful event. We are soliciting hole sponsorships for each hole. The hole sponsorships are $100, including signage to advertise your business, which will be placed on the tee of the hole you are sponsoring. St. Henry District High School Booster Scholarship for Seniors
The SHDHS Booster organization will offer two $500.00 scholarships, one male and one female Senior. All applications should be completed in full and given to Mrs. Kolkmeier by Thursday, April 27. A Booster Selection committee will receive all applications from the Athletic Department to make the selections. The committee will evaluate the applicants based on the criteria below. Applications will be held in the strictest confidence. The Booster scholarships are not based on financial need and do not include SAT or ACT testing scores. Any post-secondary college/university, including technical colleges, is acceptable. Click here to apply.

BINGO - July 1
The Athletic Department and the Future Problems Solvers will secure the volunteers for the July 1 Bingo. Twenty volunteers are needed to run this Bingo. Anyone who can volunteer to help with this Bingo, please contact Sue Kolkmeier at [email protected] to sign up. Hours of Bingo will be 10:45 am-4:30 pm. Lunch will be provided.

Summer College Bus Tour
The Counseling Department is planning the 2023 Summer College Bus Tour for rising seniors and juniors (Class of 2024 & 2025). We want to visit universities June 5-7 in Ohio and Indiana. May 20 - Crusader En Blanc (Seniors only) time change
The Crusader en Blanc time has changed from 6-10 to 5–9 pm. Parents are welcome to stay from 5–6 pm. Plan to visit the art gallery for the art show beginning at 4:00 pm. 

5/23/23 Baccalaureate Mass and Senior Awards

• Seniors dress up for this occasion and sit with their parents.
• Mass will be held in the SHDHS Drees Homes Auditorium at 6:00 pm.
• The Senior Awards ceremony will begin shortly following Mass.
• Students will receive four tickets per family (senior students do not need a ticket).
• If you need extra tickets, please call the office at 859.525.0255 or email [email protected]. If your family does not need all four tickets, please let the office know so we can open up spots for larger families. Spacing is only limited to Baccalaureate, not Graduation. We will do our best to accommodate larger family needs. Tickets will be given to the students with caps and gowns on May 12.
• Please ensure all scholarship offer information has been submitted to Mr. Chris Reeves at [email protected] ASAP - our students deserve to be recognized for their hard work.
• No caps and gowns for this evening.

5/25/23 Graduation

• Graduation practice is mandatory and will be held at Thomas More University (TMU) at 10:00 am on 5/25/23.
• Graduation will be held at TMU and begin at 7:00 pm
• There will be no limit on guests attending Graduation.
• After the graduation ceremony, students will proceed out the back doors at floor level. Families will exit at the main entrance where they originally entered.
• Graduation gowns must be turned in before leaving TMU.
