EMPOWERING GOD'S CHILDREN® -DEADLINE SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 26
SHDHS will administer the fall semester Empowering God's Children® training sessions to students during the Week of November 27.
We ask that parents complete the following permission form by Sunday, November 26.
Unlike in past years, all students must have a permission form on file whether their parents "opt-in" or "opt out" of the training.
Digital Permission Form:
PURPOSE: Empowering God's Children® is an age-appropriate comprehensive program through which educators (teachers, catechists, and youth ministers) and parents can give children and youth the tools they need to protect themselves and know what to do if someone tries to violate their boundaries. Each year, the program provides a theme that introduces and builds on the basic concepts of the Teaching Boundaries and Safety Guide.

STUDENT TARDIES AND ABSENCES PROTOCOLS
As the weather is changing and illnesses are more prevalent, here is a reminder of the SHDHS Protocols for Tardies and Absences:
Reporting Tardy and Absence
We have a 24-hour message system for parents to report students who are tardy or absent. Please call the main office anytime, day or night, at 859-525-0255, press zero (0), and follow the instructions.
Leaving Early or Returning to School
If students need to leave school due to an illness, they must go to the office to have their parents called by school staff. They should not text their parent directly.
Any student leaving early for any reason before the end of the school day must sign out at the office. Any student arriving at school any time of the day after the morning bell must sign in at the office.
Absentee Notes Required
Upon returning from an absence period (whole or half-day), a student must bring a note from their parents or guardian. A note is required even if parents pick up their child or talk to the office by phone. This note must include the following information:
- Date the note was written;
- Student's first and last name;
- Date of the absence;
- The specific reason for the absence;
- Signature of parent/guardian.
Please email this information to the [email protected] or deliver a printed copy to the front office.
Extended Period of Absence
If a student is going to be absent for an extended time, the Extended Periods of Absence/Vacations Form must be filled out.
Extended Periods of Absence/Vacations Vacations are strongly discouraged during instructional time. Students who know they will miss school for reasons related to athletics (not associated with SHDHS) or personal/family reasons should submit this form to the front office for approval by the administration of SHDHS at least five days before the absence. This will make communicating with school personnel about attendance and class assignments easier. Students will receive the same number of days absent plus one additional day to complete makeup work. Students must take the initiative to see their teachers and plan for missed work.
The form is linked above and can be found on the SHDHS website under the Parent Resources Tab, All Resources/ Application Portal/ Student Absences. A form may also be picked up in the Front Office.

"People say, 'What is the sense of our small effort?' They cannot see that we must lay one brick at a time and take one step at a time. A pebble cast into a pond causes ripples that spread in all directions. Each one of our thoughts, words, and deeds is like that. No one has a right to sit down and feel hopeless. There's too much work to do." - Dorothy Day

SHDHS CHRISTMAS BAND CONCERT
ADVANCED TOPICS IN MATHEMATICS
Seniors in Mrs. Duff's Advanced Topics in Mathematics class recently worked on a trigonometry unit, culminating in a hands-on surveying project. Students had to measure a plot of land in front of the cafeteria, create scale drawings, and find the area and perimeter of our piece of land. We also had a visit from surveyor Tim Ryan, who showed our students the technology surveyors use to do their jobs. It was a great way to see math in action!
CRUBOTICS IS GOING TO STATE!
St. Henry District High School's students from "Crubotics" VEX Robotics team 5631A secured a second-place finish at the VEX Robotics Competition that took place
in Lexington this past weekend.
Students competed with and against 38 teams from all over Kentucky. The action-packed day they required middle and high school students to execute the 2023-2024 VEX Robotics Competition game Over Under, presented by the Robotics Education & Competition (REC) Foundation.
Crubotics has qualified for the Kentucky State Championship as a tournament finalist, extending their journey as they seek to qualify and compete in the VEX Robotics World Championship.
St. Henry District High School's VEX Robotics Competition team is comprised of Elizabeth Addington, Cameron Darnell, Spencer Gearding, Karissa Schmidt, and Colin Witkowski. To prepare for the tournament, the group worked together to design, build, and program a robot using VEX V5 that could quickly and efficiently solve specific challenges that come with playing the 2023-2024 VEX Robotics Competition game, Over Under.
Each week, the students apply what they've learned about STEM in the classroom to build these semi-autonomous machines. An equally important set of skills is known through the competition -- communication, project management, time management, and teamwork.
Mr. Mark Von Bokern, the team's advisor, said, "It's remarkable how quickly these students pulled together to form a cohesive unit in August and have stayed with the program. Despite losing the first two qualification matches on Saturday, they persevered and came from behind to reach the final match. Special thanks to their parents and our technology consultant, Mr. Brian Smith."
St. Henry District High School VEX Robotics Competition team meets during the flex period once per week and after school two days per week. The students learn about electronics, programming, mechanical systems, animation, 3D CAD, web design, and materials fabrication.
St. Henry Crubotics will compete in the upcoming Loveland VRC Blended Event Qualifier VEX Robotics Competition on December 16, 2023, at Loveland Intermediate School in Loveland, Ohio. The event is open and free for media, families, and other community members to attend.
ESPORTS SEASON RECAP
As we gear up for playoffs, it is time to look back upon how this season of Esports finished. This season, we had seven teams competing across three gaming titles. Three of those teams will be representing St. Henry in the playoffs.
Some of this season's best "clutch" moments came from the Super Smash Bros teams. The SS2 team had a particular penchant for impressive late wins, with Devon Holloway (Sophomore), Chris Diaz (Sophomore), Peter Holocher (Junior), and Kyle Warner (Junior) each having a moment in the spotlight. Most recently, senior Ray Neiheisel unexpectedly faced off against his Dupont Manual High School friend, eking out a narrow victory. His teammates Eli Abdrabbo (Senior) and Charlie Erwin (Sophomore) also fought in tough matchups, with Charlie coming up big to secure a win to close out the season.
Rocket League will be sending both of its squads to playoffs this season! The old guard of RL1, featuring Kyle Moellering (Senior), Matthew Hayden (Senior), and Gunnar Ditrick (Sophomore), will be joined in the playoffs by the young all-freshmen RL2 team composed of Ben Gulla, Mason Steinkoenig, and Sasha Dunn. Best of luck to both teams!
And finally, the Mario Kart Red Squad will also progress to playoffs. They boast an impressive ranking of 7th in the state, losing only two matches all year to the state's #1 and #4 teams. The Red Squad had not dropped a round outside those two matches. The White Squad also finished strong with a comprehensive win on the last day. They are unlucky because they are one of only four teams in the state not to qualify for playoffs despite a winning record. Better luck next season!
CAN THE PANDA RESULTS
Thank you to all members of the Crusader Family who helped with our canned food drive, "Can the Pandas." With your help, we collected 7,300 items (roughly 17 items per student)! While this is a fantastic result, we were unable to beat NDA; they collected over 13,000 items (approximately 27 cans per student). The food pantries that both schools stocked have expressed their immense gratitude for helping the families they serve leading up to Thanksgiving. This project is an excellent opportunity for our students to help the wider community!
