TOY DRIVE = SUCCESS!
ADVENT NOVENA
Many Catholic families worldwide choose to pray a nine-day Advent Novena leading up to Christmas. This is a great tradition to start with your family during dinnertime or gathering for night prayers. You can set an intention for your designated prayer time together each day. The prayer includes a small scripture verse and reflective prayer to help prepare our hearts and minds for the coming of our Savior. Each prayer takes 5 minutes or less and can transform your family's spiritual life. The Advent novena begins this Saturday, December 16, and concludes on December 24. Many blessings!

Ways Parents Can Best Support Their Teen Before & During Exams
Sometimes, the best aid for a teen when studying is a relaxed environment with people who support and care for them. Your teen may be stressed, but how you respond can significantly affect the stress gauge going up or down. You can be there for them, whether to help your teen study or be emotionally supportive; it's essential to let your child know you are there for them. Checking in with them occasionally, asking how it's going and if they need anything, is a great way to show your support.
Also, taking time together as a family to sit down and eat can be highly beneficial. Although the craziness of the day may try to suggest otherwise, those precious minutes together are the perfect opportunity to check in with your loved ones, connect, and be together. Showing your support will mean more to your teen than they may offer, but it will not go unnoticed or unappreciated.
Advice For Teens - Work Smarter, Not Harder
Teens often procrastinate and rely on cram sessions or study for multiple hours, days on end. Unfortunately, neither method is a solution to obtaining the desired grade. Here are a few simple study habit tips to help teens better retain what they learn without feeling so overwhelmed:
-
Study over multiple days for extensive tests and final exams – When studying for a comprehensive exam, it's best to break up the time studying over numerous days rather than studying for a large block of time before the test. Research shows "spacing," which means looking in smaller increments (30-60min. each day) over several days, has proven to have better retention results.
-
Schedule your study – Adding a block of time for studying to your calendar can help ensure that learning is prioritized and gets done as intended while leaving you plenty of time to enjoy friends and downtime.
-
Have a study strategy – Before starting your study, map out what you will be going over each day. Try not to cram too much into one set! If you can whip through one day reasonably quickly, then great! This will give your brain a break before going to your next day's session.
-
Go on a walk – If you start to feel anxious before you start to study or while studying, go outside and breathe! Walking or jogging can clear your head and relieve some unwanted stress.
-
Take "brain" breaks – If you go beyond the desired 30-60-minute mark, take a break and move around. It's good for your mind and body.
-
Put the phone on "do not disturb." – At school and during studying time, have the phone on "do not disturb" or not near you so that it's not distracting or tempting to look at. If at home, put it in another room while studying. If at school, put it in a bag or locker.
-
Choose a non-distracting environment to study in – Along with putting the phone away, it's essential to find a quiet place where you can avoid interruptions. If you are having problems concentrating, then move spots! Changing your location when having brain fog is sometimes necessary to revive your senses and start anew!
-
Do not study right before bedtime – Relaxing before bed vs. studying until bedtime is essential. Studying up to bedtime will leave your mind racing with thoughts, and it will be hard to settle down. Try to stop studying at least an hour before the lights are out.
-
Practice self-care – Self-care is essential to feeling and trying your best! Of course, eating healthy and getting a good night's sleep is crucial in achieving self-care. Finding time to relax or do something you enjoy is also essential.
-
Use positive self-talk – Replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts. Instead of saying, "I'm going to fail the test," pump yourself up by saying, "I've got this." or "I'm going to be ok."
-
Avoid second-guessing – After taking the test, try to avoid 2nd guessing your answers and thinking about which ones you may have gotten wrong. Instead, remind yourself that you did your best.
MERIT-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS
Messages for Seniors and Parents:
1.) Your first and best source of merit-based scholarships comes directly from the college. Generally, most colleges automatically consider students for a merit-based scholarship when they apply for admission.
2.) Some colleges have additional scholarships available. It is up to students to thoroughly check each college's website to see if they can find additional scholarship opportunities. Sometimes, a general scholarship application link is on the college's website (NKU, for example). Other times, you must check out the college websites for different college majors. (For example, the College of Engineering, or scholarships for Nursing majors, or Education majors, etc.)
3.) Finally, students can also check out national scholarship databases such as fastweb.com or myscholly.com (refer to the link below for additional scholarship websites)
If students need anything from their assigned Junior/Senior counselor (Mr. Sarge, A-L or Mrs. Roebker, M-Z) to complete a scholarship application (transcript, recommendation letter, nomination, etc.), you must give us at least one-week advance notice.
Scholarship Updates
This document includes a list of scholarships offered to SHDHS students. This LIVE document will be updated regularly as scholarships come through the counseling office. Links to download applications and links to apply directly are provided. The last page will always be a list of helpful websites.

HOLOCAUST AND HUMANITY CENTER
Mrs. Brady's Holocaust Studies visited the Holocaust and Humanity Center at the Cincinnati Museum Center. It was an awesome way to end our semester course!
Students were taken on a docent-led tour of the Holocaust exhibit and then were able to explore further to discover the stories of local Holocaust survivors. Exhibits included lessons on pre-war Jewish life in Europe, the Nazi's rise to power, attempts to escape persecution, deportation to the ghettos and camps, annihilation at the death camps, efforts of resistance, and finally, survival and hope for the future. By far, the most impactful experience from the day was meeting and listening to Holocaust survivor Henry Fenichel.
Henry Fenichel was born in the Netherlands in 1938. Shortly after the Nazi rise to power, sensing the danger, Henry's parents sent a request for their relocation to Palestine, where his father’s family resided. After Henry's father was deported and murdered by the Nazis in Auschwitz, Henry and his mother still had no response to their request to immigrate. They then went into hiding. When Henry was four years old, he and his mother’s hiding place were discovered and transported to the Westerbork transit camp. From Westerbork, they were transported to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, and by the war's end, they arrived in British-mandate Palestine. Henry's family came to the U.S. in 1953 when he was a teenager. Eventually, Henry and his wife moved to Cincinnati, where he took a job teaching Physics at the University of Cincinnati until he retired after 38 years. Below is a photo of Henry with the SHDHS students.
LAS POSADAS
On December 7, Spanish Club and Spanish Honor Society students celebrated the Christmas season by recreating the Mexican tradition of Las Posadas. Las Posadas commemorates Joseph and Mary’s journey to Bethlehem in search of a place to give birth to baby Jesus. Participants go house to house asking for shelter and singing carols. We sang these traditional songs, villancicos, in Spanish, recreating the Holy Family and asking for a room at the inn.
As is customary, our students broke open a star-shaped piñata filled with toys and candy, and then we enjoyed some traditional Mexican food, desserts, and drinks, like atole. We had so much fun learning about this cultural and religious tradition and celebrating the Christmas season.
The Spanish Club and Spanish Honor Society wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. ¡Feliz Navidad y Próspero Año Nuevo!
GEOMETREE!!
Geometry students used patterns and similar figures to create a Sierpinski Triangle Christmas Tree! This tree has over 200 small triangles put together in patterns to create the design. It was definitely a group effort!!!
