Congratulations to the cast, crew, and directors of Fiddler on the Roof! What a great weekend of performances! Thank you to all family and friends who attended this production and showed support to these talented students. Thank you especially to all the volunteers who helped to make it a success; as always, we couldn’t have done it without you.

SHDHS held a food drive in the weeks before Thanksgiving. We collected over 6,300 items, which were given to the St. Vincent de Paul pantries at our feeder schools. Thanks to everyone who participated. The pantry volunteers were all very grateful to receive so much food right before the Holidays.

The SHDHS Spanish Honor Society continued our service learning project with the COAR Peace Mission this fall. For the past few weeks, we have been working on translating letters from students at the Peace Mission in El Salvador to their sponsors here in the United States. COAR serves vulnerable children and their community by providing foster care for 50-100 students, schooling for 1,000 children, and services for the community, including a health clinic and pharmacy. Through this service project, SHDHS students can apply their language skills in real-life situations while helping the mission continue serving its students. This is the fourth year we have assisted with the COAR Peace Mission. Our Spanish Honor Society chose this organization because it is a faith-based mission serving at-risk youth and helping with their educational and career goals while making a huge impact in their community.

Addison Millsap won the Think the Vote competition two weeks ago for the question, "Should the United States Allow More Immigrants to Enter the Country?". AP Government students answer a hot-button relevant question every other week through the non-partisan organization Bill of Rights Institute. They then choose the best answer in the yes and no columns and award the student a $25 prize and a prize pack. This is our second winner of the year; Sam Baker won earlier this year for his answer to "Should Students Have Broader Free Speech Rights at School?" Congratulations, Addison and Sam!

Spanish Club and Spanish Honor Society hosted a fundraiser called The Pulsera Project in November. We sold colorful hand-woven bracelets and bags made by artists from Guatemala and Nicaragua and raised nearly $500 in our third Pulsera Project hosted at SHDHS. Our clubs chose this fundraiser because it is an impactful organization that gives back to its artists and invests in improving their communities while also educating our community and sharing some of their art and culture in the process.
CRUSADER OF THE WEEK

Mr. Faust nominates Senior Magdalene Jump for Crusader of the Week for Economics.
"Magdalene brings a pleasant attitude and a smile every day to class. Magdalene has shown self-motivation and willingness to work very hard to succeed. One of her greatest attributes is her attention to detail. She is very attentive and inquisitive in class. Congratulations Magdalene!!"
Mrs. Duff nominates Senior Mia Rapp for Crusader of the Week for Advanced Topics in Math.
"Mia always brings a positive attitude to class and diligently completes her work. Even when she loses her voice, she still participates and answers questions in class. Mia is also a top-notch team player who works well in groups and looks out for her classmates. This week, she even went out of her way to fill our 1st-period toy box for the toy collection and help ensure our class gets the out-of-uniform day! Thanks for being an A.Top rock star, Mia - keep up the great work!"

WHEN: Monday, December 16, 2024
TIME: 6 p.m.
WHERE: SHDHS - Drees Homes Auditorium
AGENDA: The Director of Financial Aid from Thomas More University will be here to discuss the financial aid process and FAFSA application for all colleges and universities (not only TMU).
NOTES: The Federal Government has made changes again this year to the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) that will affect current college students and high school seniors filing the FAFSA for the first time.
Students and parents should attend this presentation if they are seeking any form of need-based financial assistance to pay for college (federal grants, college/university grants, student loans, parent loans, etc.).

CAMPUS MINISTRY SEMESTER RETREAT RECAP
This year, the "Cru-Connect" Freshman Retreat introduced the new crusaders to SHDHS's mission and identity to lead, serve, respect, and grow deeper in their relationship with God as students. Students participated in icebreakers, imaginative meditation, music and dancing, and class bonding activities.
The "We are One Body" Sophomore retreat focused on themes of knowing oneself and one's spiritual charisms, healthy and thriving friendships, and seeing God in the ordinary. Students listened to witness talks, participated in small group breakout sessions and icebreaker activities, and joined in praise and worship.
Juniors had the opportunity to attend either the all-female or all-male retreat this year. The women focused on themes of identity as a woman, positive female friendships, and seeing Christ in life's storms. The men focused on themes of being a man versus a boy, being a man for others, and finding Christ in the storm.
This year, SHDHS brought back the "Christian Awakening" retreat model which has impacted generations of students. Seniors experience a two-day overnight retreat hosted by SHDHS faculty, staff, and young adult alumni. This retreat focused on knowing and accepting oneself and walking with God today and beyond graduation.
