Tuesday for Teachers Spotlight: Religion Department
At St. Henry District High School, we believe that exceptional educators deserve exceptional support. That’s why we launched the Tuesday for Teachers initiative on Giving Tuesday, to establish a Teacher Incentive Fund that enhances teacher appreciation and retention. This fund provides resources for bonuses, holiday gifts, awards, professional development, classroom supplies, and wellness programs—all aimed at recognizing the dedication of our faculty and fostering an enriching environment for our students.
Each month, we spotlight one department to share its incredible impact on our school community. This month, we are proud to highlight the Religion Department, whose work builds the spiritual foundation of our students while inspiring service and leadership.
Spotlight on the Religion Department
The Religion Department, also known as the Department of Faith Formation, strives to create an environment where students can encounter Jesus Christ and live out their faith daily. This mission is achieved through three pillars: Religion, Campus Ministry, and Service, which together nurture the hearts, minds, and souls of our students.

What’s Happening in the Department
Religion Curriculum:
Students receive four years of Catholic education, covering various topics such as Faith and Revelation, Scripture, Ecclesiology, Morality, and the Vocation to Holiness.
-
Seniors: Exploring their “Call to Holiness,” discovering how Christ calls them to a life of purpose.
-
Juniors: We are currently learning about Catholic Social Doctrine. In understanding the roots of our call to stewardship, we hope to be imbued with the knowledge of WHY we should work to create God's Kingdom here on Earth.
-
Sophomores: Engaged in “Christology,” deepening their understanding of Jesus Christ’s humanity and divinity.
-
Freshmen: In the "Thirst for God" unit of the Revelation course, freshmen are currently considering Pope Benedict XVI's explanation of our longing for God as a "good wound" that reminds us of the true happiness we seek and urges us on toward God, the only one who can fulfill that human desire for lasting happiness. Students work individually to create an artistic depiction of this "good wound" through visual or literary means. They will then present their creative projects to their peers in class.
Campus Ministry:
The department fosters faith and community through the following:
- Grade-level retreats
- All-school Masses, Adoration, and Opportunities for Reconciliation
- Bible studies, pilgrimages, and diocesan retreats
- National events like the March for Life
Service:
Service is a core part of students' formation, emphasizing the Corporal Works of Mercy. This year, students have completed over 10,310 service hours, with many exceeding the school’s expectations.
Awards & Recognition
The department celebrates students who excel in faith, academics, and service:
- Religion Awards: Grade-Level and Four-Year Awards for academic and spiritual excellence
- Campus Ministry Award: Spirit of Truth Award for exemplary Christian values and moral character
- Service Awards: Recognizing students with 50+ hours annually and 200+ hours over four years
