The SHDHS English Department builds essential skills in vocabulary, grammar, research, and writing. Over four years, students explore literature, refine analytical and persuasive writing, and develop confidence in public speaking—all key skills for college and beyond. With over 60 years of combined experience, our dedicated teachers provide a well-rounded and engaging learning experience!

What Students Learn
English I – Freshmen strengthen grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills while studying classic literature like The Odyssey and Shakespeare. Public speaking and analytical writing help build confidence.
English II – Sophomores refine essay writing, research, and persuasive techniques while exploring a range of literary works. Resume writing and public speaking are also emphasized.
English III – Juniors dive into American literature, including The Great Gatsby and Mark Twain. Students complete a major research paper and develop college application writing skills.
English IV – Seniors study British and World Literature while preparing for college-level writing. A required research paper and speech presentation help refine critical thinking and communication.
AP English Literature and Composition: – A deep study of British & World Literature from the Renaissance to Modern periods. Students analyze complex texts, write research papers, and prepare for the AP Lit Exam.
AP English Language and Composition: – Focuses on rhetorical analysis, argumentation, and persuasive writing. Students develop critical reading and writing skills for college and beyond.
