What’s Happening in the Department
-
Science Curriculum:
- Biology/Honors: This course emphasizes topics such as biochemistry, cell processes, genetics, evolution, microbiology, plant and animal anatomy and physiology, and ecology.
- AP Biology: As students take this college introductory course, the curriculum focuses on evolution, cellular processes, genetics, and systems interactions. Students also participate in additional lab projects after school. Students will prepare for the AP exam in May.
- Chemistry/ Honors: Students will develop laboratory skills through extensive experimentation focusing on properties of matter, atomic theory, chemical bonding, acids and bases, solutions, kinetics, and thermochemistry.
- AP Chemistry: This college introductory course focuses on designing a plan for collecting data, analyzing data, applying mathematical routines, and connecting concepts. Students will prepare for the AP exam in May.
- Human Anatomy and Physiology/Honors: This curriculum focuses on the structure and function of the human body, critical thinking, and analytical assessment of biomedical case studies and current events in the medical field. Students are required to complete several dissection labs.
- Environmental Science: Students investigate the relationship between the environment and living organisms, especially the impact of human actions on the natural world, such as air, water, energy, and sustainable development.
- Zoology: Students will study and explore the animal kingdom by covering topics such as taxonomy, natural selection, and the anatomical and physiological characteristics.
- Astronomy: Students will explore the origin of the universe and the basics of celestial bodies, including planets, moons, stars, galaxies, and more.
- Introduction to Robotics: Students work as teams to analyze system requirements, design solutions, document, review, build hardware, write software, and perform system testing of lightweight, remote-controlled robots.
- Engineering Fundamentals: Students will learn about career opportunities in engineering, how engineering differs from science and technology, and the importance of engineering in society.
- AP Physics: This algebra-based college introductory course includes units on kinematics, force dynamics, work, energy, and power, and rotating systems to involve extensive problem-solving, experiments, graphing, and analysis of data.
