Crusader Check & Connect
Welcome to Crusader Check and Connect (CCC):
CCC is an extension of our Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS). This program checks on the well-being of our students through a multi-disciplinary approach. CCC encourages collaboration and allows transparency among teachers, students, parents, counselors, and mentors. The goal of the program is to care for and respond to our students' needs in a proactive approach and take a positive interest in the student.
At-risk students are flagged through a weekly screening process, and mentors are assigned to check on these students in order to increase their involvement in their own education. Mentors take a specific and strategic interest in at-risk students by helping the students to set goals for improvement and by acknowledging positive progress along the way.
We encourage you to use CCC to engage with your student(s) on their weekly progress and dialogue with them about their successes and challenges. It is important to have open communication among all parties involved in your student’s education and to encourage our students to dialogue with their teachers in a professional manner that will teach them to advocate for themselves in the future.
Our Technology Department has developed this application specifically for SHDHS. The CCC team is continuously making improvements to the application. Please be patient as we make these enhancements throughout the year.
For instructions on how to access CCC please click here.
Thank you,
Crusader Check and Connect Team

Academic Showcase
Last week, all STEM students conducted a phase change lab on cetyl alcohol. Ask your student what cetyl alcohol is used in and what a phase change is. You’d be surprised at how good it makes them and you look! Kudos to all the STEM students for following safe lab practices as we worked with hot plates, beakers, test tubes, and the cetyl alcohol!
Cross-Curricular Connections in Global & Digital Citizenship Classes
The Global & Digital Citizenship students spent the week practicing annotating reading in the context of social studies, English, Science, and Religion. Guest teachers, Ms. Rudowicz-Lux, Mr. Fay, and Mr. Zvosecz, collaborated with Mr. Dressman to provide cross-curricular reinforcement and activities. The teachers presented how professionals and students in their respective fields of study use note-taking skills to enhance their understanding of various texts, from literary works to scientific research to scripture. Students then practiced these skills to enhance their learning and honing another tool for success in high school.
Mr. Fay's Chemistry classes performed the crowd-pleasing Flame Test lab this week. Students observed the color of the Bunsen burner flame change when various compounds were placed into it. They were then tasked with identifying an unknown compound based on its flame color. This experiment ties into their investigations of atomic structure and demonstrates a connection to everyday life (fireworks give off specific colors depending on what compounds are included).
Artist of the Week
Art 1 has its first Artists of the Week for the 2021-2022 school year! The assignment was to use cross-hatching to draw a still life. Winners are Senior Taylor Preston, Sophomores Carson Shea and Annalee Ernst, and Freshman Magdalene Jump. Way to go, Creative Cru!!

Celebrations of the Most Holy Eucharist
Seniors attended the Senior diocesan Mass last Friday and prayed with Bishop Foys for the last time prior to his retirement next week. We welcome Bishop-Elect Iffert, who will be ordained on Sept 30 at the Cathedral. Fr. Greg Bach and Fr. Matt Cushing celebrated an all-school Mass with us on Wednesday, and Freshman will be participating in a class Mass next Wednesday. We are grateful for the opportunity to draw strength from the Lord as a prayer community.
Prayer after Mass: Father, may the Sacrament we received be food and medicine for us so we can bear the burdens of this world and be prepared for eternal life. Amen.
National Catholic Youth Conference - Monday is the last chance to register for the November Conference. Find additional information and download the pre-registration form here: National Catholic Youth Conference - Pre Registration

Crusader of the Week
Ms. Poly nominates Noah Francis for the Crusader of the Week in Media Broadcast. Noah embodies "Come as Many Leave as One". He thrives as a leader for the student body and works diligently to make sure every student at SHDHS has a voice. He is always smiling and his positive attitude is contagious. Noah is SHDHS's historian. He documents all events through pictures and announcements and is quickly becoming an amazing digital artist. Thank you for all you do and all that you are Noah. It's been a pleasure having you in class!
Mrs. Schwarz would like to congratulate Jesus Diaz-Hernandez for being nominated the Crusader of the Week for PE. Jesus came to us as an out-of-state transfer 2 weeks into the school year and while quiet at first, he quickly found his voice, made new friends, and is an excellent example of what it means to be a Crusader. Jesus always enters the gym with a smile, demonstrates good sportsmanship and leadership throughout the various activities and workouts. Jesus not only demonstrated a willingness to learn & work hard in PE but made the transition moving to a new school and state look easy. Congratulations Jesus and welcome to the Crusader family!

ALUMNI NEWS
Celebrating Alex Shea 5 years cancer-free
As we take the time to celebrate our breast cancer survivors, it is an honor to celebrate one of our alumni, Alex Shea class of 2019. Alex is celebrating 5 years of being cancer-free. Alex was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma when he was 15 years old. He is now a junior at the University of Cincinnati where he majors in Finance and plays baseball.
The following are Alex’s words from his recent reunion with the Cincinnati Reds first baseman, Joey Votto.“When Joey Votto came to visit me in the hospital 5 years ago it was a pick me up that was definitely needed. I knew I was going to spend another few days in the hospital for another cycle of chemotherapy which was expected. I always dreaded it, knowing that I was going to feel sick. Joey Votto coming to visit me and just talking baseball allowed my mind to be off my illness. His visit brought me excitement because he is someone I admire. Just the 20 minutes he spent with me turned a tough day into a good day. I am glad I was able to meet back up with him to show him the road I went on to where I am today. I wanted him to be able to see the impact he had on me and what a great outcome I have been blessed with because I’m sure he visits children that don’t have as good of an outcome. The idea of me reuniting with Joey Votto was to thank him, not only for what he did for me but for what he does for so many others.
He is such a genuine person which makes him so enjoyable to just talk with. It’s no wonder he is in the running for the Roberto Clemente Award!”
