Trunk or Treat Donations
The Enrollment Department is in need of candy for our Trunk or Treat event happening on October 21. It would be greatly appreciated if you would consider donating a bag of candy for this event. We have invited our Future Crusaders (feeder schools) to come trunk or treat at St. Henry District High School. All of our Clubs and Athletic teams will decorate a car/truck and give out candy. Academic Showcase
Mrs. Hartwig's English I students recently began exploring the world of Maycomb County, Alabama, in the 1930s, the setting of the classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Students worked in groups to move through learning stations designed to kindle their prior knowledge of the time period, make predictions about the characters and plot events and provide necessary background information. Students are ready to follow narrator Scout Finch through the gripping and heart-wrenching tale!
The English III students are reading Arthur Miller's The Crucible. Accusations of witchcraft, murder, and questionable evidence start to fly in Act III. To analyze motives, students are grouped by character for reading and discussion. There are even assigned "court reporters" to help keep the notes straight. A deeper analysis will occur in a few weeks when students begin the research paper process on the play.

Athletic News
Golfathon Update
On Friday, October 8, 18 golfers representing various athletic teams came together at Hickory Sticks Golf Course to play a day of golf.
As of today, Golfathon has raised $41,108.09.
The Athletic Department would like to thank everyone who donated this year. Based on current totals, we have raised around $15,000.00 to update current buses and purchase additional vehicles for sports teams. While this is a significant amount of money, it is still short of our goal and what is needed to upgrade our student-athlete transportation. Please consider passing the link below on to any family, friends, or corporate contacts you feel would want to help support our student-athletes. If any of your potential donors would like to speak with me directly, please let me know, I am happy to have those conversations. The vast majority of our teams will use the new transportation, so please consider the impact this will have on your own child/team. The link will stay up until Friday, October 22.
Thank You & Go Cru!

Campus Ministry
October is Respect Life Month.
Crusaders for Life is the pro-life club at SHDHS. This month we set up crosses and pro-life signs on our campus to remember in our prayers those lives lost to abortion. The club will also be hosting speakers from CareNet Pregnancy Center of Northern Kentucky to learn about the services they provide. Additionally, we will be volunteering at various organizations in the local community to help the indigent and marginalized. St. Joseph, defender of life, pray for us!
Freshmen Connect Day was a big success! Students participated in a variety of fun and engaging mixers, small group discussions, and prayer experiences. They connected with new people, experienced some of the Crusader faith traditions, and began the process of forming accountability partners that will continue throughout the year. Several seniors gave inspirational talks about finding one’s place in the CRU family, growing in faith, overcoming adversity, and developing healthy friendships. This day set the foundation for next week’s Freshmen Retreat.
Freshmen Retreat this Wednesday, October 20 at the SHAC (St. Henry Athletic Complex, 35 Cavalier Blvd, Florence) and Cristo Rey Church, located on the same property (near Boone County High School). Students may be out of uniform (please refer to out-of-uniform guidelines) and should bring lunch and drink. Students are to be dropped off at the SHAC between 7:45 - 8:00 am and must be picked up at 2:30 pm from the SHAC.
Senior Retreat Rosters will be available on Monday. More information to follow.
High School Camping/Retreat Overnight - “One Call Away…”
We have been invited to participate in an outdoor faith adventure with Fr. Hennigan, Deacon Jim Fortner, St. Pius Youth Group, and local schools. If you desire that your son or daughter be surrounded by people who are navigating teen years in a positive, Catholic, fun, and energetic environment, this is something you should promote. We would love to have students attend. Faith is contagious and we pray they catch it. For more information click here.

Crusaders of the Week
Mr. Dressman nominates Jason Bish as the Crusader of the Week for Global and Digital Citizenship. From day one of high school, Jason has approached the class with an eagerness to expand upon his knowledge of the global community. What sets Jason apart is the maturity in which he approaches his academic course load. Jason's attention to the many details of attending a new school and his time management skills have set the course for him to have an exceptional four years at SHDHS. We are lucky to have you, Jason! Congratulations!
Mrs. Rudy recognizes Alli Geiger as Crusader of the Week for English IV. Alli is a conscientious and hardworking student with strong character. Fall Awards
During the annual Underclassmen Awards Ceremony last week, SHDHS honored students for their exemplary performance during the 2020-2021 Academic Year. The Advancement Office recognized all students who earned scholarships to attend SHDHS, including the top performers on the High School Placement Test. Teachers nominated students for the Departmental Awards; these students excelled in their course work last year and contributed significantly to the positive environment in the classroom. They were given medals that can be worn at graduation. The Counseling Department distributed awards given by local and national organizations that honor students for community service, academic excellence, and leadership. Finally, a select group of students received the highest honors conferred during this ceremony: the St. Francis Award and the St. Scholastica Award. The St. Francis Award is given to students who live out their faith in the school community, and the St. Scholastica Award is given to students who performed at the top of their class in several subjects, demonstrating mastery of multiple disciplines.
For a comprehensive list of all award recipients click here.
Congratulations to the following four students who were accepted into the Tri-State Honor Choir: Victoria Mapes, Samuel Lunnemann, Rachel Becknell, and Molly Brue. This honor choir will rehearse on Friday, November 12, and Saturday, November 13, culminating in a concert Saturday, November 13 at 3:00 pm. All activities will be held on the NKU campus.

Counselors Corner
SHDHS Commitment to Academic Excellence
Over the past two weeks, the Counseling Department, with help from faculty test proctors, administered 280 standardized tests. Juniors took both tests, seniors had the opportunity to opt-in for the ACT, and sophomores had the opportunity to opt-in for the PSAT. We want to thank St. Barbara Church for allowing us to use their Sterling Event Center for standardized testing the past two weeks. It is the perfect facility to administer these important tests that increase our student’s chances to earn college scholarships.
The FAFSA is now OPEN! The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is the key to receiving need-based financial aid, including grants, loans, and work-study. We encourage all families to submit a FAFSA even if they feel they will not qualify for grants. The website is here:https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa(or fafsa.ed.gov).
Colleges Visit SHDHS
We will have Mt. St. Joseph visiting during Flex Time on Monday, October 18, and Western Kentucky University on Wednesday, October 20. Please encourage your junior or senior students to visit SCOIR and sign up for one of the college rep meetings!
On Wednesday, October 13 the Counseling Department planned a Senior Day for students to work on their college applications, essays, and apply for scholarships. There were admission representatives from Bellarmine University, Northern Kentucky University, Thomas More University, and Xavier University who met with seniors individually to review their essays. Also, we had admissions presentations from Gateway Community & Technical College, Northern Kentucky University, and Thomas More University, whose President Joe Chillo spoke to our seniors (pictured below). The Counseling Department is thankful for all the admissions representatives who took time out of their travel schedules to meet with our seniors!

CRU Bits
Seeing double? We have a set of identical twins on faculty-Mrs. Bessler (STEM) and Mrs. Tobergte (Religion I). They sometimes dress alike, confusing both teachers and students. Additionally, two other faculty members have twin siblings (Mrs. Vaillancourt and Mrs. Poat), and one faculty member is a triplet (Ms. Vollmer).
If you have CRU Bits you would like to share please email Nicole Gonzalez at [email protected].
