After reading “The Oval Portrait,” “The Raven,” “The Pit and the Pendulum,” and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” English III students studied how Edgar Allan Poe creates a powerful single effect through Gothic and horror techniques.
Students analyzed psychological fear, confinement, decay, and the conflict between reason and madness, focusing on Poe’s vivid imagery and symbolism. We discussed how ravens, houses, darkness, and light represent inner states of guilt, grief, and obsession rather than simple scares. Students applied these ideas by writing feather-imagery poems inspired by “The Raven” and creating symbolic self-portraits based on “The Oval Portrait.”

CRUSADER OF THE WEEK
|
|

Ms. Lindsay, Mrs. Thelen, and Mrs. Ryan nominated Sophomore Kate Moening for Crusader of the Week in AAIMS II.
"Kate embodies a beautiful combination of energy, spirit, and grit, and greets her classmates and teachers with this light each and every day. No matter the circumstances, Kate finds a positive angle on any challenge and has grown in her ability to advocate for herself and recognize when she needs others' support. Kate is the perfect combination of Cru Grit, Cru Faith, and Cru Spirit, and we are lucky to have her at SHDHS. Kate, keep shining brightly…we are proud of you!"
Mrs. Reding nominated Senior Thomas Crawford for Crusader of the Week in AP Statistics.
"AP Stats is not the typical math class, and from the start, Thomas has taken on the challenges that come with learning this discipline. He has shown good instincts and the ability to make important connections between topics as the material builds. Most importantly, Thomas brings positive energy to class, is dependable when working in small groups, and often thinks outside the box. Thank you, Thomas, for being a leader in our classroom and for making AP Stats engaging and fun for all of us. Keep up the great work! Congratulations!"
Ms. Meier nominated Senior Paige VonEye for Crusader of the Week in AP Biology.
"Paige is a delight to have in class and an incredible representation of SHDHS. She exhibits strong values and lives a life of faith. She walks into class every day with a smile on her face and a "ready to learn" attitude. During class, she is never afraid to ask inquisitive questions that often lead to intelligent, insightful discussions. Paige is willing to jump in and help classmates who are struggling to fully grasp the content by offering a different perspective in her explanations. AP Bio can be a very difficult and rigorous class, but Paige takes accountability for her learning and puts in the extra work to reach her full potential. She advocates for herself and asks about the content to ensure she has a complete understanding. I am so proud to have her as a student and can undoubtedly say that the sky is the limit."
