Campus Ministry
A Message from Campus Ministry
November presents many things to celebrate (state championships, blue-ribbon award), people to honor (veterans), opportunities for spiritual growth (retreats, mass, and adoration), shows to enjoy (art and theatre), and people for whom we pray (the souls of the departed, the sick, retreatants, alumni with special needs). It is awe-inspiring to observe everything that happens at SHDHS, above and beyond the classroom and the ways in which SHDHS marks these important moments and people. And yet, why am I amazed? St. Francis of Assisi, who brought about lasting renewal, said, “Start by doing what’s necessary, then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” Radically depending on the Lord for everything, including his daily food and shelter, St. Francis lived in total abandonment to God. The Lord renewed the culture and Church through his obedience and his rag-tag team of followers. Gratefully, we serve the same God who helps us accomplish more than we can do on our own, especially when we do it in His name. Soon, it will be Thanksgiving and Advent, another busy season and opportunity to abandon ourselves together to the awesome work of God. Expect the impossible. “Get up and stand on your feet. I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness of what you have seen [of me] and what you will be shown.” Act 26:16

Crusader of the Week
Mrs. Kaiser nominates Keylee McDaniel Crusader of the Week for Health. Academically Keylee is one of the top freshman health students. But what makes Keylee stand out is her big heart and willingness to share ideas and information. She is a pleasure to have in class and is ready to learn every day. Keylee is kind to all of her classmates and has a fantastic attitude. In life, the people we all most enjoy being near are those who radiate joy wherever they are....this is Keylee! Congratulations!
Ms. Grosser is pleased to nominate Olivia Vallecillo for Crusader of the Week in Pre-Calculus. Olivia is a hard-working student and is always willing to answer questions in class. As the year has progressed, Olivia has grown in her confidence with the Precal material and can now be found helping other students in the class. Congratulations, Olivia, and keep up the great work!
Although there are many deserving students, Mrs. Bessler nominates Mia VonLehman for Crusader of the Week for STEM Explorations for 2021-2022. Mia is a talented and kind young lady who is diligent in her preparation for class. She is always willing to answer questions to clarify the topics presented. She doesn’t rest until she has mastered the content being covered. Her lab reports are thorough and in-depth. Mia has a bright future with her brilliant mind and incredible work ethic. She is also a talented athlete. She is a member of the Girls’ Cross-Country team and competed at the state meet.
Congratulations Mia, on being nominated Crusader of the Week for STEM Explorations! You're a great example of what it means to be a Crusader. The SHDHS community can’t wait to see what your future holds!

JV Challenge Tournament
The annual JV Challenge tournament was held last weekend. This is an academic competition for freshmen and sophomores only and is sponsored by KAAC. Nearly forty students from six schools competed in our Section this year. The Crusaders did a great job and brought home several medals.

SHDHS is proud to present Fools by Neil Simon in the Drees Homes Auditorium next weekend. In the words of director Jay Giffin (a Senior at SHDHS), "While Fools strives to be lighthearted and fun, it also directly tackles very heavy concepts. While it tries to portray a heightened reality, it also portrays a peculiar realism." This is a performance that you need to see. Tickets can be purchased for $7 via the Theater website (general admission seating).
Performance Times:
Friday, November 19, 7:30 pm
Saturday, November 20, 7:30 pm
Sunday, November 21, 2:00 pm

CRU Bits
SHDHS has an honorable history with the United States military. Each year, a few graduates have chosen the military as their next step. Crusaders have served in various branches of the armed forces: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard. (No Crusaders in the Space Force . . . yet.) One student, Louis Tobergte (class of 2010), graduated at the top of his class from West Point in 2014. In addition, we are honored to have two military veterans on staff: Mark Von Bokern, who retired as a Captain in the US Air Force and joined the science department in 2015, and Chris Gunkel, US Navy, Petty Officer 2nd Class, who joined our maintenance department in 1998. SHDHS is proud of all our Crusaders who serve/have served our country and protect our freedoms!
If you have CRU Bits you would like to share, please email Nicole Gonzalez at [email protected].
