The faculty and staff at SHDHS promised the students that if the Thanksgiving Food Drive surpassed last year's collected amount, that students would be given the opportunity to PIE a teacher or an administrator. Thankfully, the weather today was perfect to go outside and enjoy 30-minutes of whipped cream pies that students used to drench the teachers and administrators. The food drive supported three different pantries.

ReCRUnection Celebration
The SHDHS Class of 2020, a class that “came as many” in the fall of 2016, was never given an opportunity to “leave as one.” This holiday season, your Crusader family would like to give them that gift.

Graduates from the Class of 2020 are invited to celebrate their successes, reconnect with classmates, and revisit the halls of SHDHS. Please look for invites, with RSVP information, in mailboxes later this month. We look forward to seeing the SHDHS Class of 2020 back on campus!

Academic Showcase
World Languages
This week, Spanish and Latin students are reviewing for midterm exams. They are working on their study guides, playing review games, and practicing their language skills. In an upcoming Spanish unit, students will learn how the holidays are celebrated throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
Spanish Club and Spanish Honor Society members worked on some delicious treats for the Día de los Muertos celebration last month.
They are currently making traditional Mexican piñatas in preparation for Navidad.
We are also collecting gifts for our adopted family through SHDHS Elves on a Mission. We wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
¡Feliz Navidad y Próspero Año Nuevo!
Over the past semester, Latin Club has been working on a project to clean off genuine ancient Roman coins. The coins have had to be soaked, first in distilled water and then in olive oil, and gently wiped off every couple of weeks. During this time, students have been learning about how much Roman coins were worth, what they were made from, and what sorts of designs appeared on them. They even learned about how coins were used as propaganda! Last week, students were excited to finally unearth and research their own polished coins which portrayed emperors, ancient heroes, and more.

Crusaders of the Week
Mrs. Hasken nominates Abby Enzweiler for Crusader of the Week for AP Spanish Language. Abby has shown a strong motivation and work ethic inside and outside of the classroom all year in AP. It is clear she puts a lot of time, effort, and thought into her assignments and tries to use her language skills outside of class as well. She is aware of the benefits of knowing Spanish in her future, and to that end, she has really worked on improving her language proficiency. She asks thoughtful questions in class and always has a positive attitude. Congratulations Abby!
Congratulations to Julianne Dirst for being chosen Crusader of the Week for Psychology! Mrs. Fugate notes that Julianne excels in psychology, but most importantly, she comes to class with a positive attitude every single day! She is ready to learn, participates in class, and is an absolute joy to teach!
Julianne, if I could clone you, I would :) Way to go!
Mr. Avina nominates Olivia Wulfeck Crusader of the Week for Chamber Choir. Olivia has become a solid member of the chamber choir. She is the first to volunteer for trying potential solos and first to volunteer for anything needed if opportunities open up in the Fine Arts Department. She not only watches carefully but also listens to her section and the group extremely well. Olivia has carried her part in the ensemble, even as the only person in her section, if others are not in class. Thank you, Olivia. You are a rock star.
