Academic Showcase
Do you remember taking Chemistry in high school? All of those mass to mole and limiting reactant calculations were great fun, right? Well, Mr. Fay's Honors Chemistry students know the feeling. As you can tell from these photos, some of them are working hard, while others have had enough! All of them have done a great job over the past three weeks mastering the concepts and practice of Stoichiometry.
The freshman at SHDHS just completed their introduction to engineering project. The purpose of this project is to help them learn how to collaborate with fellow team members, practice division of labor and tasks, and follow and meet project guidelines for materials and project construction. Their project was a national contest called the Fluor Engineering Paper Ball Run. Overall they did a very good job on this project. Congratulations to our overall winners, with a “formula score” of 39.24 (based on time and number of sheets of paper used per contest formula), the 5th Period STEM Honors’ team of Will Hammond, Nick Parnitzke, and Nick Rodino. Their video and score will be entered into the national competition on 2/20/22 when submissions open. Congratulations to our second-place team (a very close second) from First Period STEM Explorations of Lucy Bolton, Olive Williams, Tori Hils, and McKenna Egan with their “formula score” of 38.72. The students started their mousetrap cars this week which will be a more challenging project. Ask your student about their ball run and car and see if they can explain the physics involved in them.
Freshmen Learn Audio & Video Editing
The Global and Digital Citizenship class welcomed Ms. Poly into the classroom to learn basic video and sound editing through WeVideo. The students learned how to import and organize media, create video and audio transitions, modify sound and video files through the editing tools in order to create short videos. Each class will utilize its new editing skills throughout the 2nd semester to enhance its understanding of Geography and Global Issues.
