Dear Students and Parents,

The Counseling Department is launching a new initiative this year called "Sources of Strength" (SOS).

Sources of Strength is a nationwide program. We are working with the Kentucky Department of Education to implement the program at SHDHS. Currently, the program exists in 100 high schools across Kentucky. SHDHS will be the first private high school to implement the program. (see brief SOS description below) To launch Sources of Strength at SHDHS, we need 20-25 student peer leaders representing grades 9-12.

Mission: Our mission is to provide the highest quality evidence-based prevention for suicide, violence, bullying, and substance abuse by training, supporting, and empowering both peer leaders and caring adults to impact their world through the power of connection, hope, help, and strength.

Vision: We believe many strengths are more powerful than one, and our united goal is to activate and mobilize these strengths in ways that positively change individuals and communities.

The cool part about this program is that it is not adult-led; it is a student-led program. The adults are involved in motivating and supporting the student "campaigns" that will run three times during the 2022-2023 academic year. The students choose the "campaign" themes. For example, the students may choose for the October "campaign" to center on drug and alcohol awareness and prevention and tie that into our Red Ribbon week activities. The additional two "campaigns" will run in February and April. Possibilities include suicide awareness and prevention, the dangers of distracted driving and driving under the influence, reasons not to vape, the advantages and disadvantages of social media, etc. Again, the students choose the theme, and the adults support their efforts.

If you are interested in being on the student peer leadership team, you will have the following commitments:

Parents: Thank you, in advance, for supporting Sources of Strength implementation this year!

Students in grades 9-12: LMK if you are interested in serving on the student peer leadership team. Simply reply to this email, and I will follow up with you. This is a great way to positively impact the SHDHS community and add a leadership position to your high school resume.
